Robert Widders Robert Widders was born in Liverpool in 1954. He applied to join the Royal Navy at the age of 14. This led to him enjoying the unusual distinction of being the last man alive to have served in all three branches of the armed services; the Royal Navy, the Army and the RAF.His civilian career has been equally eclectic, including working as a Ranger in Africa and a Brussels sprout sorter in Cork. He also found time to study for an Honour’s degree in History and a Master’s degree in Heritage Management. Robert Widders now lives in Bristol where he is busy writing his third book, an account of the Irish soldiers imprisoned in the Japanese POW camps during the Second World War.
